My advice is do prior research on what you are looking for.

I didn't appear for any exam during the selection procedure. A J1 VISA was required though. The VISA interview was fine and easy. I flew by KLM airlines and the experience was good. No Student fare was offered. I landed at Amsterdam and the University was just 2 km drive from the airport. Baggage rules vary from airlines to airlines. I did not have any immigration issues at the airport. The University had not arranged for any "meet and greet" service.

The study experience was very good. I was happy with the way internship program was designed. Faculty were good and friendly. Research environment was better than expected.

I stayed in the accommodation provided by the University. It was an apartment style accommodation. Had access to the library facilities and they were very good. Social scene was good.
