I'll be glad to help students who want to get in this institute. Let me know if you have any questions.
Visa interview was pretty straight forward. VO asked me for my financial documents summary only. Confidence, assertiveness, direct contact to the eyes, alert ears and courteous language does the job! I gave GRE and TOEFL and I prepared by myself for 2 months (together) on my own using Barron's review. I didn't use any educational counselor's services because I believe they don't have enough knowledge about medical related fields. I flew Air India and the experience was ok. I'd recommend Jet Airways whenever possible. I landed at JFK which is 30 mins on wheels from my institute. I got privilege of having 3 70lb bags under special offer. Excess baggage is a pain and unnecessary if you are flying to big US cities as everything is available here for a little higher price. No immigration issues at POE. I didn't use the meet and greet facility provided by the school. as I had a friend to pick me up (A cab driver showed up on his behalf holding my name board) and it is not infrequent in this busy country.
I am on a full tuition waiver with 25K $/ year scholarship which is enough for a single person ( little difficult for a couple in NYC even if they live economically).
Program is good as long as you don't expect actual teaching from faculties and ready to find your own way digging the books and scientific papers. Faculties are always there to help you out and you have got enough financial and equipment resources to work your project out. There is definitely room for progress if you are dedicated.
I live in a rented studio apartment with my wife a block away from my school because residential hall facility is way much expensive (1300 $/MO vs 900 $/mo) with really small rooms. Lecture halls are from small to large size. equipped with computers, projectors, OHPs, slide projectors depending on the usage and the type of lectures held and of course black boards or white boards. Sports facility is reasonably good with at least 10 different game set ups (indoor/outdoor) including sauna, weight room, swimming pool and the best part is that it is free for the students and their spouse/ dependents. Part time jobs are available but are not high yielding because of so many students and hours you get weekly are not enough and not worthwhile when you are working on a PhD. SUNY DMC encourages minority students to apply so it is little easier for Indians to get in. There us South East Asian student's society the majority of the members are born Americans and medical students. They celebrate 2 major Indian festivals in a year.
I don't think downstate has any placement cell, but polytechnic university does have a placement department which is not so awesome because I have seen majority of the bio medical engineers serving software firms only. It is easy to get h1 if you are applying for residency program and got accepted. I am not sure about how active the alumni society is but it does give a lof of funding and holds party 1-2 times a year at least.
