Friends, consult seniors and advisors before taking a course. Structure your courses so that they work towards the field you are interested in.

To prepare for the visa, I went to a counselor and prepared standard questions. I just had to answer basic questions. I wrote GRE & TOEFL. I attended coaching classes for GRE and one mock test for TOEFL. Attended IMFS coaching classes. Madhavi Desai was my educational counselor. Got my tickets through Travel solution. Tickets were easy though I didnt get the best deals. I flew Air France and Delta, Air France was good. Delta was not very hospitable. They did not offer student fares. Landed at Salt Lake City, It takes 1 1/ hrs by cab to reach the institution from the airport. We were allowed 2 luggage bags. One handbag of specified dimensions, no knives, no seeds, no liquids and no raw food. Excess baggage was allowed for a fee. I did not face immigration issues at the port of entry. I did not avail of meet and greet services. I hired a cab.

I am very happy with my program structure. Some of my subjects were Object Oriented Software Design/ Data Structures & Algorithms/Windows & GUI/ Software testing and research. Computer Graphics/ Software engineering with a project – I was not too satisfied. There is room for improvement for the professors dealing with Computer Graphics/Software engineering with a project. Lecture halls are very good and adequate. Library is good, we have books, study rooms, cubicles, café.

I am staying at Campus housing, they are very good. We have sports facilities – called hyper. For my department, its quite easy for international students to get hold of part time jobs. Either email them frequently/drop your resume/apply for campus jobs online / approach a professor after you've taken their class for a job they are holding and show your interest (this one worked for me). Cant say much about the social scene - very dull. The night life is almost non existent. The weather is pleasant in the summer/fall, ridiculously cold in winters. The Indian student society handles Diwali, republic day, independence day, thanksgiving lunch, etc.

To get jobs we have to apply online to the companys website. Not easy for international students at the moment. We had a job fair recently. GE, Novell (dont remember the others) attended these fairs. Work permit process doesnt look easy. I dont have many details on this. I won't graduate before 2010. There is an alumni society at the university, but I dont have much idea about how it functions.
