Work hard and study hard, because it will pay off in the long run - that is my only advice.
I had to take up TOEFL and GRE, I did not attend any coaching classes, only self study. I needed a student visa and the experience was pleasant. I flew Lufthansa to Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The airline did not offer a student fare. I landed in Houston. This airport was 300 miles from Louisiana State University. No excess baggage was allowed. No immigration issues at the port of entry. There was a meet and greet service at the airport.
Research Assistantships and Teaching Assistantships are available to qualifying students.
My MS program was structured very nicely. Most of the professors I worked with very very helpful and knowledgeable. The lecture halls and library was state of the art.
I lived in an off campus apartment. The sports facilities provided are world class. Getting on campus jobs are hard. Social and night life scene is pretty awesome in Baton Rouge. Weather is hot and humid during the summer months. Does not get as cold in the winter as other parts of the US. LSU has an ICC - International Students Cultural Center, that arranges cultural programs thoughout the year.
LSU has a very active Career Services Center that helps students find jobs after they graduate. They have student career fairs two times a year - in the spring and the fall semesters. 100s of companies take part in the career fair. Work permit process is a little tedious. LSU has an active alumni club. The alumni club does not help in placements as fas as I know.
