The best way to find out about an university/department is to contact a student who is studying/ has studied there. He/she can provide the best and the most accurate picture of the admission criteria, funding availability, courses, job opportunity, etc. Indian students are ubiquitous in the US and Europe. They are always willing to help out prospective students. The bottom line is to use as many resources as possible and ask questions. Never feel shy to ask any question.

Selection process still remains unclear. Work experience will definitely help in getting assistantships after an admission is granted. However it does not guarantee an admission. It is always good to know the reason for not getting admits in universities. Usually calling up the department office will help you determine the reason(s) for not getting an admit. I personally do not trust counseling services. Their counseling merely reflect what they have seen in the past. They have no insight into the admission process as for as I have seen.

Big universities have organized ways of searching for apartments and have valuable tips for acclimating to the new ambiance.
