This is a good university for CS and IS branch but definitely not the best one. The programs are very good and one hasa lot of options to choose from.

I gave GRE and TOEFL. I enrolled myself for Dilip Oaks coaching class in Pune, but it was not of much help. I had to prepare on my own. Oaks provided me with a counselor. I had to schedule an interview with Mumbai US consulate for my F1 visa. Getting VISA was easy. Interview lasted for less than 1 minute. Direct flights to Maryland are available. I landed in BWI airport which is not too far away from airport. It took me around 30 minutes to go to the campus. Baggage rules depend on the flight you take up and schemes they allow. Airlines allow up to 3 bags for students plus 1 cabin bag and one laptop bag. Students do get few concessions. Immigration was never a problem. One of my friends had come to pick me up on airport. Seniors often come to pick the juniors up from the airport.

I received assistantship. It depends on GRE score. Many avail student loan from nationalized banks in India. That takes care of the tuition fee and living expenses as well. I had sufficient savings from my job.

The program is well structured. They are very flexible and you have lot of options to choose from. Lecture halls and other lab facilities are excellent.

Staying on campus is very expensive. I preferred staying with 2 other room mates. Parties can be arranged on weekends and its quite fun place to live in. Weather can be humid and it rains often here. Again it depends on individual preferences. I love gloomy weather, many dont. In UMBC, we had something called EKTA ISA for Indian students. It helps incoming students with airport pickups, temporary accommodation, arranging cultural events etc. There are many student clubs which one can involve in. These clubs are formed and run entirely by students.

UMBC has its own career service. It depends on the scenario. In recession, even American students dont get placed. Usually the placement in the university is healthy. The university has something called Shriver service which usually helps students get internships. Lot of things goes behind this, like previous experience, grades etc. UMBC offers many career fairs as well. We have to take pro active steps by approaching the seniors, building networks than wait for others to help you out. Its different than what you see in India. In good times, companies visit campus and recruit in bulk, during recession you have to take the initiative.
