Be prepared to live in a small town. Baton Rouge is not the typical American cities we saw in movies. If you have enough conviction and motivation you can find all sorts of opportunities on campus to make your life easier. I witnessed that not many people applied for scholarships and tried for jobs. If you try a little you can gain a lot. Do not isolate yourself by only hanging with Indians. Make as many American friends as possible. Be aware that baton Rouge is not a huge commercial city. Its the political capital of Louisiana and does not have a lot of industry there. So that is a con you will have to live with compared to any other university in any other bigger city. Also, LSU is famous for its engineering courses and not management. Choose your course, university, city wisely.I had to take the GMAT. I prepared by taking practice exams at USEFI, Delhi. I did not attend any coaching classes nor did I take the services of any educational counselor. I needed an F-1 visa. The visa interview was very smooth as I had full scholarship and an assistantship job offer letter when I went for my visa interview. Getting tickets was easy, I flew BA. I took the flight which arrived at Heathrow and departed from Gatwick. I had to change airports in London from Heathrow to Gatwick. This route enables us to take extra baggage and also is much cheaper than doing the direct Delhi-Heathrow-Houston route. Not aware of any student fare. I did not face any immigration issues at all. My university did offer a Meet and Greet service, at Baton Rouge airport, but I spent a week with my brother in Houston first and then drove to Baton Rouge, did not take any help from the meet & greet service offering.LSU offers numerous scholarships/assistantships/tution waivers. Before I even landed in the US I had a scholarship and an assistantship. I was paid for my entire 2 years of my program working for my professor and my fees were waived off. I only paid nominal fees each semester. The program at LSU was nice. There was surely room for improvement. I was not challenged enough.I was living in on-campus graduate housing. At LSU, these were very very bare, but extremely cheap so did not complain. Lecture halls, library, sports facilities were awesome. Finding jobs was not hard at all on campus. Social scene was very dead. Baton rouge is a very small city so whatever could be done socially had to happen on campus. Weather is moderate and very similar to New Delhis weather. There is an international society at my univ and they have all sorts of events all year long.My university surely has a placement cell. Be wise what you choose to study. If the market requires your qualifications you will get a job otherwise not, no matter how good a college you go to. A lot of companies come to the college. It is your job to keep looking up companies about to come to college, dont wait for someone to come to you asking you for your resume, you have to go to them. Again, a little effort shown in the US goes a long way. Work permit process is no hassle at all, just follow the rules. Have not had a chance to interact with the alumni network yet. Do not waste time in the United States. Be professional. Be confident. Keep your eyes open. Dont limit yourself to a certain social environment. Take initiative. Its more than enough to take you a long way forward.

Work hard and study hard, because it will pay off in the long run - that is my only advice.I had to take up... TOEFL and GRE, I did not attend any coaching classes, only self study. I needed a student visa and the experience was pleasant. I flew Lufthansa to Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The airline did not offer a student fare. I landed in Houston. This airport was 300 miles from Louisiana State University. No excess baggage was allowed. No immigration issues at the port of entry. There was a meet and greet service at the airport.Research Assistantships and Teaching Assistantships are available to qualifying students. My MS program was structured very nicely. Most of the professors I worked with very very helpful and knowledgeable. The lecture halls and library was state of the art.I lived in an off campus apartment. The sports facilities provided are world class. Getting on campus jobs are hard. Social and night life scene is pretty awesome in Baton Rouge. Weather is hot and humid during the summer months. Does not get as cold in the winter as other parts of the US. LSU has an ICC - International Students Cultural Center, that arranges cultural programs thoughout the year.LSU has a very active Career Services Center that helps students find jobs after they graduate. They have student career fairs two times a year - in the spring and the fall semesters. 100s of companies take part in the career fair. Work permit process is a little tedious. LSU has an active alumni club. The alumni club does not help in placements as fas as I know.

Once I came here, I realized the difference of studying style between here and back in India. Indian education is theor...etical and less practical experience is provided. In US, everything is based on the practical knowledge of the subject and these kids have definitely mastered their application skills. In general studying experience in USA has been a hard but an interesting job for me and because of that, it has helped me to broaden my views.I had to give GRE and TOEFL to get into the US university. GRE needs at least a 3 month preparation and TOEFL needs around 10 days. GRE consists mainly of math and English. I did not attend any coaching class. Just took preparation tests of Dilip Oak Academy, Pune. A Visa is required for the US university. Visa interview was just for a minute or two. . I already had a research assistantship for 2 years of my masters program; so, it was easier for me to answer their questions about funding. Finding tickets thru a travel agency was easy. I had flown with Lufthansa airways, stayed at my relatives place for 10 days in NJ and then flew to Louisiana. Airline offered not the student fare but student allowance which allowed me to take 3 check-in bags for free instead of 2 bags. Baggage rules have changed and airline website is the best way to find out about updated rules. Indian Student Association for every university is very prompt in providing any support needed.I had a research assistantship for 2 years of my masters program. The program is very interesting and challenging.Accommodation was not very easy to find. They provide you with a temporary accommodation for the first few days until you get your house. On campus recruitments are done twice a year. Getting H1 visa after you get a job is the most difficult problem. So, we can apply only to those companies which provide H1 visa to international employees. Thats one of them major drawbacks. Generally students search for a job thru monster.com/ carrebuilder.com or yahoo.com. The best way is to go to the company website and upload the resume there. I got my job the similar way.
