Allen College offers a new dual-focus track in the Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) program: adult nurse practitioner/gerontological nurse practitioner. The goal of this dual focus MSN track is to prepare advanced practice nurses with the expertise needed to meet the primary care demands of adults and the rapidly growing segment of the population of older persons. The ANP/GNP dual focus MSN track will provide a broad foundation in adult primary care with a significant emphasis on (1) disease prevention, (2) health promotion and (3) care of adults with chronic diseases and health conditions. Graduates gain the knowledge and skills necessary to assess, diagnose and manage common acute and chronic adult health problems, including the unique aspects related to care of older persons. Students also gain an understanding of the healthcare delivery system in this country. The ANP/GNP collaborates with other healthcare professionals to ensure continuity of care in a range of settings. Graduates will complete a minimum of 600 hours of directly supervised clinical practice. Clinical practicum sites are arranged as close as possible to home areas for students.

A bachelor's degree with a major in nursing from a school accredited by the appropriated regional accrediting organization. A minimum undergraduate grade point average (GPA) of 3.00 on a 4.00 scale. Current licensure as a registered nurse in Iowa. Individuals are currently licensed when licensed in another state and recognized for licensure in Iowa pursuant to the nurse licensure compact contained in Iowa Code chapter 152E. The Admissions Office will verify the status of each applicants RN licensure. Minimum of one-year clinical nursing experience as a registered nurse is required for clinical course enrollment. Courses in statistics and nursing research at the baccalaureate level. Computer literacy. Three professional/academic letters of reference. A biographical sketch. A statement of personal and professional goals. Score of at least 550 on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) for foreign-born students.Copy of current CPR certification card. Applicants for the Acute Care Nurse Practitioner program must also have completed ACLS and have recent acute care experience (within the past two years) prior to enrolling in their first clinical course.

Applications are considered once the applicant's file is complete. Graduate students are admitted in the fall and spring for beginning coursework in the subsequent semester.
